"My Heart Volition Continue" is a song recorded by Canadian singer Celine Dion. The vocal serves as the main soundtrack to James Cameron'due south blockbuster flick Titanic, based on an account of the transatlantic body of water liner of the same name which sank in 1912 afterward colliding with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Body of water. The vocal'due south music was composed by James Horner, its lyrics were written past Volition Jennings, while the production was handled by Walter Afanasieff, Horner and Simon Franglen.[1] [2]

Released equally a single on November 24, 1997, from Dion'south 5th English-linguistic communication studio album, Let'southward Talk About Dearest (1997), and the moving-picture show'southward soundtrack, the honey power carol peaked at the tiptop of the RPM Top Singles Nautical chart. Exterior Canada, "My Heart Will Go On" became a global hit, topping the charts in over twenty countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, the Republic of Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.k., and the United states.

"My Heart Will Go along" is considered to be Dion's signature vocal.[iii] With worldwide sales estimated at over eighteen million copies, information technology is the 2nd best-selling physical unmarried past a woman in music history, and one of the best-selling concrete singles of all time.[4] [5] Information technology also was the world's best selling single of 1998.[half-dozen] It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century past the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. The music video was directed by Bille Woodruff and released at the end of 1997. Dion performed the song to honour the 20th ceremony of the film at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards on May 21, 2017.[7]

Recording origins [edit]

James Horner had originally composed the music for the song as an instrumental motif which he used in several scenes during Titanic. He so wanted to prepare a full song version of it, to employ during the movie's terminate credits. Lyricist Will Jennings was hired, who wrote the lyrics "from the signal of view of a person of a great age looking back so many years".[8] Director James Cameron did not want such a vocal, simply Will Jennings went alee anyway and wrote the lyrics. When Dion originally heard the song, she did non want to record it[9] every bit she felt she was pushing her luck past singing another picture show theme song after "Dazzler and the Fauna" and "Because You lot Loved Me".[viii] Horner showed the piano sketch to Simon Franglen, who was working with him on electronic textures and synthesizers for the film score. Franglen had worked with Dion for several years on many of her major hits to date.[10]

Recording [edit]

James Cameron felt obligated to include a theme song to promote the flick. Glen Brunman also stated that the soundtrack album was supposed to be "No vocal, no Céline".[11]

Dion's manager and husband René Angélil convinced her to sing on this demo version, which she had not done for many years. Tommy Mottola claimed that Dion recorded the vocal in one take, and that demo is what was released in the picture show. However, she re-recorded the song for her anthology release after the pic's release and its tremendous success. It was an edited version with few note changes at the stop of the song.[11] Horner waited until Cameron was in an appropriate mood earlier presenting him with the song. After playing information technology several times, Cameron declared his approval, even though he worried that he might exist criticized for "going commercial at the end of the motion-picture show". Cameron too wanted to appease anxious studio executives and "saw that a hit song from his movie could only be a positive factor in guaranteeing its completion".[12]

Composition [edit]

The vocal is written in the fundamental of E major. The verses follow the chord progression of E–Bsus4–Aadd9–E–B. The chorus has the chord progression of C m–B–A–B. The vocal modulates to A-apartment major.[13] Information technology contains heavy emphasis on the instrumental arranging. Usage of Tin Whistle is prominent, backed past melodic use of strings and rhythm guitars. The vocal features both audio-visual and electronic instrumentation. Dion'south song performance is described as "emotional" and "demanding" by Pandora Radio.[14]

Versions [edit]

The original Horner/Franglen produced "demo" version of the carol runs a trivial over five minutes and has an extended ending with longer, segmented vocalizations by Dion. Franglen mixed the last picture and soundtrack version, expanding on the demo and adding orchestra to the final chorus. It is this version which appears on the Titanic soundtrack anthology and is also played over the ending credits of the film.[fifteen]

When the single was to be released to radio, it was produced further by Walter Afanasieff who added string and electric guitar, as well as rearranged portions of the vocal. This version, which runs a piffling over four and a half minutes, appears on both the 4-rails maxi single and Dion's album Let'south Talk About Love.[xvi] At the top of the song's popularity, some radio stations in the US and the U.k. played an edited version of the song, that had dramatic moments of dialogue from the Jack and Rose lead characters in the moving-picture show inserted in betwixt Dion's song lines.

The lyrics contain an extra line "In that location is some love that will non go away" between the third chorus and the final verse on the official Celine Dion website[17] and the Let's Talk About Love booklet.

Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø was scheduled to record the song for the film in 1997, merely Dion'south vocals were preferred due to Horner's decision to support Dion's career.[18] [19] [xx] [21] In a December 2014 interview, Horner quotes: "When I had completed the Titanic [film], I had to make up one's mind for Celine Dion or Sissel['s] [vocals]. Sissel I am very shut, while Celine I had known since she was eighteen, and I had already written three film songs for [her]. Simply that was before Celine was known and filmmakers and marketing people had not washed what they should have done for Celine and [her] songs. And so I felt I owed her a Titanic chance, merely I could [still] take used Sissel there".[22] Instead, Kyrkjebø completed much of the score for the soundtrack anthology, Titanic: Music from the Motion Pic.[18] Dion accepted to sing a demo for the picture, despite initially hesitant to record equally she had already washed three film songs earlier.[23] [24] Years later, Horner chose Kyrkjebø to perform "My Heart Volition Go along" on both world premieres of Titanic 3D (2012) and Titanic Live (2015).[19]

AllMusic senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that the song "shines the most brilliantly" and marked it as a standout runway from the Let'south Talk About Love anthology.[25] Some other AllMusic reviewer, single editor Heather Phares, who rated the single 4 out of 5 stars, wrote, "Indeed, her performances of it on VH1 Divas, the 1998 University Awards (wearing the film's 'Heart of the Ocean' pendant, no less), and on her 1997 album Let's Talk About Love take cemented 'My Heart Will Go On' every bit the quintessence of Dion'south sweeping, romantic style".[26] Larry Pic from Billboard called information technology a "stately ballad", noting that the vocal "woos with romantic lyrics and a melancholy tune that is fleshed out with a weeping flute solo." He added, "There'southward no denying that Dion tin hitting notes that shatter drinking glass—and she does so here—only it's a pleasure to hear her build slowly and remind listeners of her ability to pack volumes of emotion in a whisper. A fine single that will add together a much-needed touch of course to every station it graces."[27] People Magazine stated that "the dramatics are fitting when she sings "My Heart Will Go On" as a survivor mourning the lover she lost when the big send went down."[28] Yahoo.com described it as an "emotional ability ballad that perfectly captured [Titanic 'southward] romantic yearning".[eight] Vulture said that information technology is a powerful song and has "1 of the most glorious key changes in recorded music history", and that "its legacy is eclipsed only past" Whitney Houston's "admittedly far superior" song "I Will Always Beloved Yous".[29] Washington Mail appreciated how the song was non just tagged on the end of the iii-hour picture show, only has a lyrical motif that was already placed throughout the key moments of the film's love story in lodge to create a musical narrative.[30]

In 2011, Rolling Stone readers ranked it the 7th worst song of the 1990s, with the mag writing, "Celine Dion's song and the moving-picture show have aged very poorly...Now [the song] probably just makes you cringe".[31] The Atlantic attributed the song'due south refuse in popularity to its overexposure and added that over the years in that location have been many jokes that parody the song's lyrics by claiming "My Eye Will Proceed" goes "on and on and on".[32] Vulture reasoned that it has become fashionable to dislike the song because information technology "encapsulates well-nigh everything that once-enthusiastic moviegoers now dislike about Titanic: It'due south outdated, cheesy, and overly dramatic".[29] Maxim deemed it "the 2d about tragic issue ever to effect from that fabled sea liner".[32]
